The bitter truth is we are in danger of losing our hip hop heroes to seizures. Or at least that is what the news wants you to think. Lil Wayne is in the hospital after a seizure. That much we know. He id not dead/having last rites administered as was reported over the weekend. Then when I turned on the TV this morning it was reported that Tom Loc, the 80's rapper behind the hits "Funky Cold Medina" and "Wild Thing" had collapsed onstage last night and may have had a seizure. It was confirmed that Loc had a history of seizures, having suffered one back in 2009.
And the greatest hip-hop hook man ever-- Nate Dogg died in 2011 after suffering a series of seizures. What si the link behind hip hop and seizures? Could spitting rhymes and bobbing your head cause internal brain issues that lead to seizures? Is the diet on a rapper to blame? Maybe it's the drugs? Smoking endo sucking on gin and juice, laid back or not, may not be the key to a long life in the game. Or maybe it's coincidence that a few people with similar jobs end up being afflicted by the same medical issues?
The fact that Lil Wayne and Ton Loc's conditions are being talked about in the same story is because of what I like to call "News bundling." The network news stations love to present tragedy. It's good for ratings. "If it bleeds it leads" has long been the mantra. How much better if they can link 2 tragic stories together. More bang for the buck! Kind of like a buy one get one free sale. The news do it with mass shootings, pandemics and food warnings. Conspiracy theorists (I didn't say nuts) say it's the governments way of keeping us down by keeping us scared. Remember terror alert levels? Not Orange! Anything but orange!
While I'm sure that the government may work in strange ways, I believe that the news bundling is just a prime example of the general loss of sensitivity in society. Plus we now find bad news entertaining. We tune in waiting for the high speed chase to end in a dramatic crash, complete with fire. We stay riveted to our screens hoping the police stand off will turn into a Michael Bay style hail of bullets. We like our news bloody and bad and the News stations are more than happy to provide that service. Because they have no souls and that's the bitter truth.
R.I.P. Nate Dogg. Get well Loc & Weezy.
